April 2024

Here are notes from the March 26 meeting of the CinDay Guild. If you are interested in delving more deeply into biblical stories, please consider joining us. We welcome new participants. These notes will help you know what who we are and what we are up to in April 2024.

March 26, 2024 Zoom Meeting hosted by Amelia Boomershine

Attendees in Dayton and Wilmington via Zoom: Tom and Amelia Boomershine, Ellen Patton

Attendees in Cincinnati:  JoAnne Rouse Clark, Darrell Miller, Janet Steele

In Person Meeting began at 7:00 p.m.             Zoom Meeting began at 7:15 p.m.

(Due to technical issues with the new gear at Great Miami River District, we were able to join the Zoom meeting with JoAnne’s help. Janet will contact Nancy Newton to determine if and how we could use the in-place laptop in the conference room.)

We spent a few minutes checking in with one another. Amelia is recovering from a bad case of the flu; her doctor informed her that this year’s flu vaccine has not been helpful in deterring the current flu strains circulating. Ellen is enjoying her granddaughter and will begin watching her two days a week starting in April.

Janet called the meeting to order. First up, Darrell’s question of what to label the first-person storytellings he presents. Darrell will be telling the story of Thomas on April 7th. Janet refers to it as “embodied telling” and Tom and Amelia agreed that “monologue” also describes this style of telling.

We then moved to a discussion of the upcoming program at SEM Terrace.

SEM Terrace Program – Monday, April 29, 1:30 p.m.

JoAnne noted that the program director has changed but we are still invited to tell next month. Here is the current list of stories and tellers for the theme “New Life” —

JoAnne – John 3:1 – 17 paired with her personal “born from above” story

Darrell – Jonah (verses to be selected) and a story from a book he’s reading. As Darrell works on Mondays, it is likely he may not be able to attend this telling.

Amelia – John 20 (The Empty Tomb) paired with a personal story

Ellen – Psalm 107:1-32 with story of a man from Brazil

Tom – Story of the Paralytic paired with his personal recovery story

Janet – John 11:1 – 44, Raising Lazarus with story of polio wards/iron lung machines

Tom and Janet – Birth/Death Narrative – Janet will send Tom revised script

Tandem Telling

All are continuing to work on the Birth/Death Narrative. We will also add the story of Luke 8:40 – 56, raising a child, the woman with a bleed. Janet will send out a script for us to begin learning another tandem telling to add to our CinDay Guild “suitcase.”

Checking In

Amelia continues with Sacred Stories at the women’s correctional facility. She’s waiting for the chaplain to confirm but the teachings will likely be on Wednesday. In the meantime she is reviewing her workshop on Circle the Word which she will present at this year’s Festival Gathering.

JoAnne is working with a member of Norwood Grace UMC on a tandem telling that combines the stories of Mark and Matthew, hoping to encourage another storyteller to join us!

Armstrong Chapel has not moved forward on forming a Scripture by Heart group. While disappointing, we still hope to be invited to present a program sometime in 2024.

In closing, Tom expressed joy that the CinDay Guild is “getting out there” again, now that the pandemic has lifted and we are engaging in learning new stories. We should all be on the lookout for churches and groups that would welcome a storytelling program.

At the next meeting we will finalize the order of the SEM Terrace program and run through our stories.

Next meeting – Tuesday, April 23 at Great Miami River District at 7:00 p.m.

One again, many thanks to Amelia for hosting us on Zoom and to JoAnne for getting us connected at District HQ.
