March 2024

CinDay Guild Meeting – February 20, 2024

Zoom Meeting hosted by Amelia Boomershine

Attendees in Dayton via Zoom:  Ellen Patton

Attendees in Cincinnati:  Amelia and Tom Boomershine, JoAnne Rouse Clark, Darrell Miller, Janet Steele

Meeting began at 7:10 p.m.

A New Year Begins!

We gathered via Zoom in January to begin program planning for 2024. On the agenda:

Meeting times/location; SEM Terrace Program; Tandem Telling; Outreach

Janet began with a reflection on the importance of companion animals in our lives, citing a story of a wounded Ukrainian volunteer who found the will to live when visited by her service dog. Until that visit, the volunteer was experiencing suicidal ideation due to the trauma of war. Her dog was overjoyed to see her again and restored her will to live. We are grateful for the companions with which we walk, thanks be to God!

Meeting Dates

Nancy Newton has confirmed that CinDay Guild has use of the Great Miami River District conference room on the 4th Tuesday of each month, February through October. We will discuss later this year if we wish to continue our November – January hiatus.

SEM Terrace Program

JoAnne confirmed that April 29, a Monday, works for our return visit to SEM Terrace. Program is scheduled for 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. We chose the theme of “New Life” for storytelling. We will follow the same pattern we did with our previous program, pairing a Bible story with a personal story or story that parallels the Bible story. Ellen will be able to join us for this program! We should all have our story ideas (Biblical/parallel) set by our next meeting in March.

Outreach

Tom checked in with Jill Croswell at Armstrong Chapel. Jill and another person told the birth narrative on Christmas Day Eve. Jill told Tom that of the class they taught last year, no one has stepped up to form a Scripture By Heart group at Armstrong. However, there will be a program sometime in May. Jill serves as a chaplain at a local retirement facility and would like CinDay Guild to present a program there. Details to follow.

Rev. Sandy Vogele at Red Lion U.M.C. is designed a Lenten worship program that centers on several Bible stories and has asked if there are tellers who would be willing to help with the series. CinDay stepped up! Here are the stories and tellers;

Mar. 3: “The Awful Pain of Feeling Rejected” Luke 15: 25-32 (The Elder Son) – Darrell

Mar. 10: “What Can We Count on from God?” Luke 18:1-7 (The Unjust Judge) – Janet

Mar. 17: “Eyes Too Busy to See” Luke 10:25-37 (The Good Samaritan) – JoAnne

Mar. 24: “Do Everything as If You Were Doing It for Our Lord” Matthew 25:31-40 – Amelia (Janet may sub if Amelia presents the Birth/Death tandem telling with Grace By Heart on that date)

Tandem Telling

At last month’s meeting Janet suggested that we begin working on Rev. Dennis Dewey’s arrangement of the Lukan Birth/Death Narrative. She emailed copies to everyone. We spent about 20 minutes working with a partner on learning this telling. The challenge is that the stories (Christmas/Crucifxion/Resurrection) are known to us but as unbroken tellings. To separate them into Teller One and Teller Two takes careful concentration on the clues Dennis provided throughout the telling. For instance: wrapping the babe in swaddling clothes leads to wrapping Jesus’ body in a linen shroud. By working the tandem telling over the next few weeks, Amelia may have the opportunity to tell it at Grace U.M.C. on Palm Sunday, while Darrell and Janet may have the opportunity to tell it at Chapters in Northside. By continuing to learn this tandem telling, we expect that two of us will be able to present it at the SEM Terrace outing on April 29, and possibly as a location arranged by Jill Croswell from Armstrong Chapel.

Checking In

Congratulations to Ellen, her new grandbaby Keziah and parents. Ellen shared a picture of Keziah through Zoom – what a blessing!

Amelia has been asked to teach an “Introduction to Biblical Storytelling” at a Lutheran Church in Chillicothe sometime this summer. Date TBD. Depending on her availability, Ellen may be able to assist in this outreach.

Donna Marie Todd, editor of The Biblical Storyteller, asked if she could print Amelia’s storyboards in an upcoming issue, and Amelia gave permission. Look for that article.

On the health front: Tom is nursing broken fingers, Darrell is plagued by a tooth ache, Janet’s car was hit by a deer on the way to the meeting, and we’re all glad that February is on the way out. Cannot WAIT for spring!

The meeting closed with The Lord’s Prayer at 8:20 p.m.

Next meeting – Tuesday, March 26 at Great Miami River District at 7:00 p.m.

Many thanks to Amelia for hosting us on Zoom!
