Debrief of “Stories of Hope” Program at Friendship Village, Dayton Ohio

These are the stories that were part of the program, and the teller. Tom opened the program with a welcome and accompanying the hymn “My Hope Is Built”

  • Tom – Mark 2/Hoping to Walk Again
  • Hope Grandy – Genesis 7/Memories
  • JoAnne – Ruth 1/A Wedding Story
  • Darrell – II Timothy/My Mother and Grandmother
  • Amelia – John 1/Light in My Darkness
  • Roberta Longfellow – Isaiah 60/A Picture of Heaven for Me
  • David Larson – John 11/A Song by Mary Ellen Carter “Rise Up”
  • Barbara Blacklock – John 21/Feeding Friendship Village

The program concluded with community singing “I Love to Tell the Story.”

The response was extremely positive and Barbara received many good comments. CinDay Guild has a standing invitation to return in the future. People were moved, and one person told Tom it was the best experience of her life!

SEM Terrace Program in Cincinnati – The tellers available for the October program are JoAnne, Darrell, and Janet. Janet has invited Linda Young and Marti Kreps to participate but has not heard back yet. Ellen Patton may come as a member of the audience but is not ready to participate by telling. JoAnne reached out to Joyce Orr, who wishes us well, but it not planning to participate. At present, the story line up is as follows:

  • Darrell – II Timothy/My Mother and Grandmother and a new story to be named
  • JoAnne – Ruth 1 with extra verses and expanding the personal story
  • Janet – Pumpkin Christians, John 1/Light in the Darkness (World War II story), II Kings – The Widow’s Oil, open to audience to ask “When Have You Lived on Leftovers?”, Sower and the Seed/The Garden Song (told by Tracy Radosevic)

As we’re close to All Saints/All Souls Day, Amelia suggested including the Great Cloud of Witnesses, inviting audience members to name those persons deceased in 2023.

Armstrong Chapel – Tom has a four-week class beginning at Armstrong Chapel in October. According to Jill Croswell, they are close to the cut-off of 10 persons. Janet has reached out to Jill offering to craft a program for Armstrong Chapel sometime in 2024. It is under consideration by the senior pastor and we may have another program opportunity there next year.

2024 Meeting Dates – CinDay Guild has been on hiatus in Nov/Dec/Jan in years past but it was decided we would resume meeting in January in 2024, even if it’s only by Zoom.

General Discussion – JoAnne asked for an explanation of “Grace by Heart” and Tom shared how the group was formed, how it has continued since 2008, and that anywhere from 6 – 8 persons regularly tell the scripture in Sunday worship at Grace U.M.C.

Tom is teaching the Birth Narrative at Armstrong chapel with an understanding of how that story was first heard while under Roman occupation. He also noted that opening the Friendship Village program with community singing helped draw everyone in and settled the nerves of the tellers.

Amelia will be teaching Exodus ! and 2 during her prison ministry, beginning with Shiphrah and Puah.

Janet asked if the 2023 Festival Gathering keynotes were available in some form for those who did not purchase Zoom access during the event, noting that there had been technical difficulties. Amelia has the link to the keynotes and it was decided to review the keynotes at our first meeting in January.

Meeting adjourned early at 8:30 p.m.

Next meeting – October 24 at Great Miami District offices [rescheduled]

We will continue to work on our “Stories of Hope” program tellings.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Many thanks to Amelia for hosting us on Zoom from Dayton!
